Portfolio wines sell out so fast, they’re practically a rumor. Part of the reason for this is because there’s only eight barrels of excellence produced annually. The other part of the equation is that they’re made by Genevieve Janssens, the winemaking genius that turned Opus One into shorthand for mind-blowing Napa wine. This intimately prepared Cab Sauv is Genevieve’s ultimate passion project, and it shows. Massive yet graceful, this sumptuously engaging red is chock full of the type of vibrant complexity that true oenophiles can unpack for hours. Lively black cherry fruit, spicy black currant, black olive, and herbs of Provence dance on the nose and brighten the mid-palate with a boisterous mouthfeel, while smooth tannins guide to a fresh, slightly minerally finish.

About the wine

2012 was a Hall of Fame Napa vintage; one that enabled the region’s true masters to rise to the top and show off every iota of their viticultural genius. Groundbreaking winemaker Genevieve Janssens didn’t waste a drop in telling the vintage’s epic tale of terroir through her sublime uber-limited production Cab Sauv. Like she has in the past, she nabs sublime Cab Sauv grapes from a regionally-renowned vineyard and gently underscores their intensity with the perfect amount of finessed fruit culled from arguably California’s oldest Cab Franc vines. The result of her painstaking, passionate efforts is a powerful yet elegantly balanced giant built on a foundation of seemingly infinite complexity and intrigue. Enticing, vivacious notes of creamy, spicy black currant, black cherry fruit, cassis, black olive, and herbs of Provence pulsate from start to finish. These notes illuminate the mid-palate with an energetic, acidic mouthfeel. Silky smooth tannins lead to a fresh, lively, and lingering finish underscored by whispers of minerality. Only eight barrels of this brilliant masterwork were produced; considering the wine world waits impatiently for this label to drop, even so much as pausing to debate its purchase leaves potential for a regrettable mistake

About the winery and vineyard

Winery origins don’t get humbler than a garage. That’s exactly where the husband-and-wife team of Luc and Genevieve Janssens launched Portfolio. But theirs is no ordinary garage. Rather, it’s Napa’s tiniest state-of-the-art winery; one that produces extremely limited barrels of knee-quivering viticultural excellence. Limited is not an understatement here; a mere eight barrels are produced per vintage. Since Genevieve’s otherworldly winemaking skill is matched only by her own dizzying starpower, clutching one of these rare treasures is virtually a sacred experience that will draw looks from friends that straddle the line between winsome and envy.  Genevieve’s reputation to produce life-affirming wines gives her carte blanche to two of Napa’s most prized vineyards, Hendry Ranch Vineyard in southwest Napa and Detert East Vineyard within the Oakville AVA’s historic To Kalon Vineyard. The former vineyard’s 40-year-old vines are firmly planted in uniquely potassium-rich streams of volcanic soil, producing highly concentrated fruit whose power is matched by its elegance. The latter site, home to what’s considered to be Napa’s oldest Cab Franc vines, boasts alluvial, gravelly loam soil that’s known for nurturing small-batch grapes bursting with fruity, fragrant finesse. Genevieve artfully blends these grapes so they encourage each other to flourish, resulting in a wine that will once again disappear in a twinkling of an eye.

About the winemaker

When Genevieve Janssens speaks, the wine world stops to listen. Such is the clout that the French-born mastermind behind Portfolio’s limited edition wines possesses. It’s an acumen that she’s practically been cultivating since day one, since she was born to a family of vintners. She’s honed her knowledge in some of Napa’s most groundbreaking venues over the years. To wit: her first California gig was an assistant enologist position at Robert Mondavi Winery. She followed that up by being appointed Director of Production for Opus One, the legendary collaboration between Mondavi and Chateau Mouton-Rothschild’s Baron Philiippe de Rothschild that has become utterly synonymous with Napa wine perfection. She’s also managed to pick up France’s prestigious Croix de Chavaliere dans l’Ordre du Merite for agricultural excellence along the way. When she’s not crafting the hyper-limited terroir-driven love letters of the Portfolio label, she can be found expanding Mondavi’s legacy as its Director of Winemaking.

"The 2012 is the biggest Portfolio Cabernet Sauvignon we've tried to date. It's a massive wine with plenty of creamy and spicy black currant and black cherry fruit which will require for the wine to be decanted in the morning in order to be enjoyed for dinner. Yes, it's that big and structured but you will then be rewarded with something very special in your glass. I actually drink the bottle over a 3 days period and it was showing beautifully on the third day which tells me there is a lot of aging potential here."

"This is a tiny-production blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Cabernet Franc, the latter sourced from Detert East Vineyard along the Oakville bench, the former from Hendry Ranch in western Napa. Made by Genevieve Janssens, it has an old-world soul with plenty of California complexity, balanced in woody notes of coconut flake and black cherry, the tannins are fine-grained and integrated. A simply gorgeous wine."

“The best wine I have ever tasted from Portfolio is their 2007. An identical blend to the 2006, this vintage is much more impressive, evident in the extra texture, additional minerality, and the extraordinary aromatics of this inky purple-colored wine. Sweet cassis, incense, charcoal, and cedar are all present in this opulent, full-bodied red, which is sensationally concentrated, with brilliant purity and delineation. It should drink well for 15-20 years. This small project of Dr. Luke Janssens and his wife Genevieve, who many may know from her career at the Robert Mondavi winery, primarily sources its fruit from the Oakville sector of Napa Valley, particularly the Hendry Ranch. These wines are blends of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.”

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
