Named for a subregion of France’s Roussillon, Department 66 is a diamond in the rough. When vintner Dave Phinney falls in love with a vineyard the results are always terrific, but the terroir here is simply perfect for fresh, bright rosés.
Grenache is king in this rural area of Southern France, where it ripens to make wines of fantastic intensity--whether they’re ruby red or a perfect, transparent pink. Don’t let the name fool you, ‘Fragile’ isn’t a bantam-weight wine--it explodes with fresh fruit character and just enough texture to stand up to any dinner table. At this price, there’s no need to think it over!
About the wine
D-66’s Fragile isn’t a dark, brooding hulk like Orin Swift wines, but it has the same mesmerizing fruit that draws us in and won’t let go. From Dave Phinney’s newest property in the Roussillon region of Southern France, Fragile is sunshine in a bottle.
Grenache leads the way in this bright, refreshing take on schist soil and Mediterreanean breezes that surround Phinney’s vineyards in the town of Maury. Supported by brooding Syrah and wildberry-scented Carignan, Fragile is a delicious, chuggable combination of Roussillon’s finest, with aromas of dried rose petal, ripe apricot, and garrigue. In true Phinney style, there’s enough weight on the palate to drink this rosé with steak, and enough finesse to enjoy it solo, whether you’re on the beach or a snowy mountaintop.

"Vibrant Pink color with a nose of briary fruits, black berry, stone fruit, herbal tea and watermelon seed. Palate strikes with fresh black/blue fruit, ripening plums and summer strawberry. A medium bodied wine so delicious now and will drink well for the next 2 years. Why wait?"
