Kenwood’s limited production wines aren’t just exceptional 90+ point selections. They serve as Sonoma County’s premier advocate. This stupendous label provides further evidence why this region that’s oftentimes lumped in with Napa as a mere accessory deserves to snag the spotlight on its own merit. Winemaker and Sonoma whisperer Pat Henderson sources textbook Cab grapes from one of the county’s top vineyards and crafts a full-bodied beast whose fruity savageness with a silky smoothness, and an exquisite mouthfeel. This is one to stack high!

About the wine

The drought that rocked California in 2013 was not entirely devoid of a silver lining. The lack of rain added extra stress to vines planted in the Alexander Valley; for Cab Sauv fruit, this compounded strain is a feature, not a bug. This unique landscape provided a wondrous arena for Kenwood’s resident winemaking wizard Pat Henderson to show off just how deeply in tune he is with the subtleties and nuances that lurk within Sonoma County’s majestic terroir. Spoiler alert: it’s ridiculously deep, and his jaw-dropping intuition is the engine that drives this brilliant study in Cab Sauv expression to terrific heights. Uncompromisingly bold and full-bodied, this magnificent delight fully displays the complex sophistication that makes the Alexander Valley appellation viticultural catnip for even the most discerning Cab Sauv snobs. Pronounced aromas of plum, fig, and ripe berry are accompanied by nuanced nudges of cocoa nibs, cola, and vanilla. The fruity essence lushly lands on the palate, cushioned by a voluptuous, expansive mouthfeel. Smooth tannins guide the experience to a lingering, silky conclusion. This limited-production wine perfectly captures the pleasures of the Sonoma County landscape, making it worthy of capturing a prime spot within any wine lover’s collection.

About the winery & vineyards

Technically, Kenwood’s been around since 1970. However, the roots of their history stretch beyond Prohibition. Since day one, and long before Sonoma County became an official AVA, the small-batch specialists have been crafting their soul-stirring wines from the rustic confines of the former Pagani Brothers Winery; a historic hunk of property that was built in 1906. Their unique setting and total devotion to honoring the land through wholly sustainable practices allows them to be an undisputed authority on the unfettered joys of premium Sonoma County wines. It’s a chance for advocacy that’s not wasted in the least bit, as the bevy of 90+ gems that emanate from the hands of winemaking guru Pat Henderson can attest. For the creation of this superb version of the winery’s acclaimed Six Ridges label, Pat focuses his attention to the vineyards that dot the undulating landscape of the highly-esteemed Alexander Valley. The appellation’s well-draining, rocky soil naturally promotes the kind of struggle that kicks weaker fruit to the curb. Those that thrive in such strained conditions are shielded from being overwhelmed by the Pacific Ocean’s influence by nearby mountains. This combination of elements create the kind of intensely expressive Cab Sauv grapes dream about. In Pat’s capable hands, these dreams of pure Sonoma County bliss are transformed into a luscious reality that oenophiles of all stripes can enjoy.

About the winemaker

Sonoma winemaking has always held a dear place in Pat Henderson’s heart. The roots of this passion were planted at Kenwood over 30 years ago, when he worked on the 1983 vintage while attending UC Davis’s prestigious Viticulture and Enology program. Even as his burgeoning career led him to pursue opportunities in Napa and in Washington State, he always felt the call of this special section of California Wine Country beckoning. This whisper morphed into a scream by 2003, and he returned to Sonoma County and Kenwood in 2003 to work under the winery’s original winemaker and small-lot master Mike Lee. Today, Pat melds this well-developed acumen with his own remarkable ability to detect the intricacies of Sonoma terroir like a wizened soothsayer viewing a palm, resulting in an endless parade of 90+point phenoms. When he’s not crafting mind-bending wines, Pat can usually be spotted hiking Sonoma’s mountain trails with his dogs or talking shop as a member of both The Society of Wine Educators and The American Society for Enology and Viticulture.

91-93 pts - Alex Casella, WSET Advanced

"Vibrant purple ruby color with a pleasantly fragrant nose of wild boysenberry, dusty cherry, sweet spices, violet and rose petal. The palate is bursting with black and red fruit that leads to a mouthfeel which takes charge on the palate and is extremely well rounded. An early term drinking wine that will satisfy the masses. Drink now or hold over next 3 years. This is a party time wine with a terrific case buy!"

92 pts - Christopher Sawyer, “Sommelier to the Stars”

"Since releasing its first reserve Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978, Kenwood Vineyards has gone on to set a new precedence for working with pristine fruit from hillside vineyards spread throughout Sonoma County. To pay tribute to these special winegrowing regions, the winery’s new release of the 2013 Six Ridges Cabernet Sauvignon is a celebration of the unique characteristics of the world-class grapes grown in Alexander Valley. Located above the charming city of Healdsburg, this special appellation is highlighted by sweeping vineyards, hillside vistas, gravelly soils, warm days and cool nights. These are ideal conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon grapes with deep flavors, balance, and plenty of backbone. Deep, rich and elegant, the Six Ridges Cabernet Sauvignon opens up with attractive aromas of wild berries, fresh plums, roasted fig, vanilla and cedar. On the palate, the flavors seduce the senses with expressive notes of blackberry, dark cherry, plum, fresh mountain herbs, cocoa beans and layers of spice; a silky texture; chewy tannins; and a long, dry and rewarding finish. For food pairings, try this full-bodied wine with roasted vegetables, pasta with lamb meatballs, chicken cacciatore, barbequed ribs, juicy steaks, beef brisket, and sharp cheeses."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
