Blink and it’s gone. That may be the best way to describe the level of captivation The Prisoner has had on the wine world since its initial vintage dropped in 2003. The reason why oenophiles seem shackled to The Prisoner Wine Company’s take on the “mixed black” wine style is because it’s bold and complex, yet gracefully harmonious. This latest iteration lives up to the cult wine’s massive expectations in a huge way, and not just because it comes in a whopping 1.5L vessel. Winemaker Jen Beloz pulls an enticing mix of top-notch grapes from practically every corner of Napa Valley to produce a bombshell of a blend that would be a crime not to consume. Lively aromas of bing cherry, dark chocolate, and clove shift to persistent notes of ripe raspberry, pomegranate, and vanilla that stick around for a smooth, luscious conclusion. This will be gone in a flash!

About the wine

The creation of The Prisoner is far from an open and shut case. Some 80 vineyards throughout Napa Valley contributed succulent Zin, Cab Sauv, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Charbono grapes to form the soul of this bad boy. In the hands of a lesser winemaker, chaos may ensue. However, winemaker Jen Beloz serves as the ultimate warden. Armed with a level of patience that would impress Andy Dufrense, Jen allows these different viticultural voices to coalesce into one harmonious tone on their own accord. Her careful guidance results in a robust yet elegant study of persistent flavor and sinful smoothness. The journey begins with vivacious notes of bing cherry, dark chocolate, clove, and roasted fig on the nose. A seamless transition highlights tenacious intermingling flavor bursts of ripe raspberry, boysenberry, pomegranate, and vanilla. The luscious mélange of flavors carries things to a smooth finish. Checking in at 1.5 L, this special bottle gives oenophiles lucky to wrap both hands around its ample frame a double dose of the indulgent pleasure that’s given the label such a rabid cult following.

About the winery and vineyard

It could be argued that The Prisoner Wine Company has been synonymous with interesting, creative blends before it officially existed. Its most famous wine, The Prisoner, initially gained rock star status as part of Orin Swift’s popular portfolio. While the iconic label “left the band,” it didn’t merely embark on a solo career. The eponymous Rutherford-based winery has surrounded its famous selection with a bevy of exceptional, fascinating blends that command attention in their own right. Led by the one-two punch of winemaker Chrissy Wittmann and consulting winemaker Jen Beloz, each complex, crafty label is made with a minimalistic approach, anchored by an environment that lets the grapes express themselves naturally. For a label like The Prisoner, it’s a process that requires the kind of artistic skill that only an expert winemaker like Beloz possesses. She’s sourced Zin, Cab Sauv, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Charbono grapes from over 80 different vineyards to create the latest iteration of the cult classic, including fruit from the big-league vines of Solari Family Vineyard in Calistoga, Korte Ranch in St. Helena, and Tiedemann Ranch in Yountville. Each of these disparate grapes have something important to say about Napa’s terroir; Jen’s passion-driven patience and gentle touch makes sure that no voice is obscured, thus ensuring the popular “mixed black” blend matches the hype that’s followed it even before the winery that makes it launched.

About the winemaker

Jen Beloz’s first winemaking gig was theoretically designed to convince her to go to medical school. Her physiology professor at University of San Francisco arranged for her to work at his friend’s Australian winery, thinking the work would be too much for her to handle. His cunning plan backfired, and the wine world is significantly better off for his blunder. The seeds of knowledge Jen wound up planting Down Under fully blossomed in California through stints at Cline Cellars and Ravenswood, where she honed her craft under the astute tutelage of California Zin master Joel Peterson. The massive viticultural acumen obtained as Peterson’s understudy makes her the perfect person to oversee the production of a wine so utterly iconic as The Prisoner. Even though Jen’s been working with The Prisoner Wine Company since 2011, she still sees the crafting of such a Napa Valley heavyweight as a challenge; one that she embraces with unbridled enthusiasm.

"The 2015 Prisoner continues to impress and builds on the core foundation that Dave Phinney set in motion years ago. Not much has changed in terms of wine quality and fruit sourcing, which is a good thing in this case. I could barely discern the 14' vs 15' vintage tasting them side by side..... the wine is on full-throttle showing as big, fat, plump, ripe and juicy. A true mixed of fruit (cherry, raspberry, plum, blueberry, blackberry, currant, and some raisin flavored ripeness on the finish. Structural sound with fined tannins, length, and elegance. Hits all the marks leaving the drinker no doubt the quality that's in the bottle."

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
