The chalky limestone soils of Rioja don’t make wine-growing easy. Instead, the poorly draining soils force the vines to struggle, eventually yielding grapes that are complex in flavor and intensely colored thanks to long days in the harsh Spanish sun. The 1808 Valcavada is the product of that painstaking farming, and winemaker Jenaro Fernández wouldn’t have it any other way.

Bright crimson and cherry-scented, this young wine was barely kissed with six months in oak, keeping it solidly medium-bodied and refreshing. Notes of dried strawberry, cherry, tobacco and crushed herbs mingle in a wine with moderate tannins. An insane value, the 1808 is a Tempranillo you won’t want to miss!

About the wine

With an emphasis on non-interventionist winemaking, the family is hands-on and chemicals off, never using additives in the vineyard or cellar making, the Valcavada an incredible value that screams Rioja terroir.

Continuing the family history in the region that dates back to the 16th century, the 1808 wines are made in the traditional fashion--without a single chemical additive in the vineyard or cellar, and never filtered. Biodynamic farming practices ensure healthy vines, and grapes ripened by their environment rather than tainted by chemical residue. As a result, their 100% Tempranillo wines are pure, bright and driven by earthy Rioja terroir.

Aged for six months in American oak barriques, the 2014 Valcavada is fruit-driven and medium bodied, with touches of licorice, baking spice, and leather on the palate. Acidity from calcium-rich soils of Rioja make this wine continually refreshing, while moderate tannins round out a long, savory finish. This young wine is a stellar example of Tempranillo at its best, and one to order by the case!

"Cloudy ruby purple with a hint of translucency lends a nose reminiscent of Southern Rhone's famous Chateauneuf du Pape. Flavors of Blackberry, kirsch, blistered strawberry, garrigue, licorice and fragrant blue flowers jump out the glass. A fleshy palate up front kicks off with seductive black/red fruits, figs, stewed plums, anise and slate-like texture. Lots of lift here with medium tannins and a long mineral finish. This wine calls for roasted pork or lamb or even roasted fish with a briny olive tapenade to pair delightfully with. If you like Rhone and Rioja, this wine is right up your alley, but could easily convert the Italian/New World Wine novice into absolutely loving this Spanish gem. A wine that will drink well for years to come."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
