Howell Mountain’s rugged terrain only summons Napa’s best of the best, like Duckhorn and Cakebread. Grand Napa is in this elite group of winemaking studs, and proof of their status is found within each bottle of their 2012 Master Red. Curvy and lush, the wine’s sumptuous marriage of Cab Franc and Cab Sauv grapes produces a balanced red whose notes effortlessly flit between bright berries, lilting botanicals, and burly minerals.

About the wine

On and on continues the impressive string of releases from Grand Napa’s collection of gems. Howell Mountain has the most identifiable taste in all of Napa.  Whether it’s Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel or Petite Sirah, this mountain appellation leaves its imprint on wines grown here.  And what an imprint it is – bold, dark, rippling fruit with noble, polished tannins, amazing floral perfume and a smoky minerality that beguiles.  Whew. Truly regal stuff.  It’s one of the most respected growing regions in the world and even the French have to admit that Howell is a terroir on par with Pauillac or Graves.  Tasting Grand Napa’s bottling is a benchmark for this dignified appellation, delivering an age-worthy bottle that cuts no corners in its pursuit of fine-grained structure and authoritative flavor.  Excellent stuff that improves dramatically with cellaring.  Serve with a short decant and match up to the best beef and lamb dishes.

About the winery

Located in the heart of the Napa Valley, Grand Napa attracts an international mix of wine industry talent and clientele.  This is an exciting new winery to watch that has enviable holdings in Oakville, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain, Stag's Leap, and Atlas Peak – talk about assembling a superstar roster!  The team behind Grand Napa brought together their cumulative 60+ years of wine experience in founding the winery and have travelled extensively through the world's great wine regions.  They've used this experience to steer the ship at Grand Napa as it makes it mark with robust but accessible reds with a specialty in Cabernet.

About the vineyards

Howell Mountain has long considered one of the best growing zone in all of Napa– producing Cabernets of such distinction that it was awarded Napa’s first sub-appellation back in 1983.    The elevation here is quite high – between 1400 and 2200 feet – and the grapes that grow up here are truly different and special.  Temperatures are colder, but the grapes get more sun up above the fog line. This gives them thick, purple skins which result in naturally bigger and structured wines.  Howell Mountain wines hang with the very best from any appellation, and are often the longest-lived Cabernets from any vintage.  The area attracts only producers pursuing the most concentrated and muscular wines, such as Dunn, Cade, O’Shaughnessy, Ladera, Duckhorn and Cakebread.  Few appellations can boast as many 95+ point wines as Howell Mountain, and it all comes back to this difficult to access and difficult to farm terroir that is world-class.

About the winemaker, Dwight Bonewell

From walking the fields during the vine’s dormant winters to the packing of cases, Dwight Bonewell has his hands in every step of the process at Grand Napa.  Some would call this micromanaging but ultimately, it’s what separates the mediocre wineries from the ambitious.  Carefully following the vine from budbreak to bloom and veraison to harvest, Dwight beings to prepare his battle plan for when the fruit comes in: full destemming, small batch fermentations and a thoughtful barrel regimen in French oak that enhances the wine with secondary notes without over-extracting tannin.

93-95 pts - Brian Whitaker, Sommelier/GM

"Red berries, black berries, rose petals, sage, anise, cassis, licorice, menthol, vanilla and oak. The wine is layered, polished with has slowly emerging flavors- so decanting is a must. The heavy dose of Cab Franc gives lift and finesse to this big weighty "Masterful Red". Recommended Pairing: Spiced Pork Chops with Sweet Potatoes"

94+ pts - Chris Stanley, Certified Sommelier

"The 2012 Grand Napa Master Red is a dynamic single vineyard expression of Howell Mountain at it's finest (Cab Franc 57% - Cab 43%). This gemstone vineyard processes only dark volcanic red soils which makes for dark ripe berries packed full of deep purples, black cherries, pomegranates, violet, lavender, hibiscus flower, sage, mineral, and a blast of crushed stone. Absolutely Delicious."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
