They say wine is bottled poetry. So it makes perfect sense that a winery named after the legendary Goethe poem would deliver a Cab Sauv that stands as an epic tale of Napa terroir. Winemaking legend Agustin Huneeus has painstakingly collected an exquisite mélange of fruit sourced from some of Napa’s most celebrated appellations to create a devilishly opulent expression of Cab that’s earned every point of the 90+point ratings it’s received. Packed with boldly concentrated fruit and layered, juicy complexity, it’s the kind of Cab Sauv that’s poised to excite even the wine world’s most cynical Cab Sauv snob.

About the wine

2014 was considered a “winemaker’s harvest;” a vintage that provided great fruit but also a platform that beckoned Napa’s best and brightest to show off their skills in a creative fashion. It was an ideal environment for Faust’s Agustin Huneeus; the winemaking legend whose star has burned brightly in the wine world for half a century. Agusteen’s passion for pursuing viticultural perfection leads him to source exquisite fruit from Faust’s Coombsville estate vineyards and other rock-star vines found in other acclaimed Napa appellations. His uncanny knack for plucking great grapes has once again produced a great Cab Sauv that’s hauling in impressive 90+point scores, and with good reason. This full-bodied dynamo is loaded with bold, intense fruit and unctuous complexity. Nuanced overtones of cigar box and cocoa powder add a rounded edge to robust aromas of cassis, star anise, and plum. A decadent palate attack seductively unravels to release intricately balanced notes of juicy blackberries, blackcurrant, Asian plums, charcoal, road tar, and dark chocolate. Rustic, integrated tannins lead to a lingering finish. This is a pure interpretation of Napa terroir as told through its signature grape, making it an essential bottle for any self-respecting Cab lover to own.

About the winery & vineyards

Faust derives its name from the epic Goethe poem about a man selling his soul to Mephistopheles. It’s a moniker not picked because the winery and offshoot of Quintessa Winery made a pact with the Prince of Darkness, but because its endgame is to make wines that match the bold, daring nature of the literary masterwork. With that being said, there’s no denying the wines produced here are devilishly good. Their magic stems from the extraordinary expertise of winemaking legend Agustin Huneeus, who has built a half-century-long career of uncompromisingly seeking out nothing short of the finest fruit the land has to offer. For this outstanding label, Agustin’s unmatched instincts heads him to a Murderer’s Row of exemplary vines planted in some of Napa’s most legendary appellations, from Faust’s estate vineyards in the Rutherford and Coombsville AVAs to highly desirable blocks ensconced in Mount Veeder, Atlas Peak, and Yountville. His tireless pursuit of perfection has resulted in a wine whose remarkable depth of character is worthy of its own poem.

About the winemaker

There hasn’t been anything that Faust vintner Agustin Huneeus hasn’t done throughout his illustrious 50-year winemaking career. This includes some heavy-duty accomplishments, such as launching the progressive, biodynamic-centric Quintessa vineyard in Napa’s Rutherford Valley and guiding Concha y Toro’s ascension to becoming the largest winery in his native Chile. But regardless of what he’s achieved or where his achievements have taken place, Agustin has hung this passionate lifelong pursuit on the firm belief that great wines originate from great vineyards. Considering his remarkable penchant for creating critically adored high-scoring labels vintage after vintage, it’s practically understood that his philosophy has served him very well.

95 pts - Alex Casella, WSET Advanced

"Dark purple black currants, bramble-berry, graphite, dark chocolate, grilled rosemary, asphalt, coffee grain and charred vanilla bean entice you on your palate and deliver lots of character in the mouth. A boldly structured wine framed with moderate tannins and medium to long finish. This will age for years to come but like many of the 2014s, I am finding a much more near-term approach to catching stride. This is a solid value from a reliable producer in a stellar Napa Valley vintage."

94 pts - James Suckling

"This is very intense with blackberries, dark chocolate, fresh mushrooms and blackcurrants. Full-bodied, fine and fruity yet complex and intense. Structured and lightly austere. Beautiful. Drink in 2020."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
