When Envy Wines’ Mark Carter and “King of Cabernets” Nils Venge make a wine, high scores from Robert Parker on down tend to follow. This unapologetically robust expression of California Cab Sauv shows why those in the know dig the duo’s handiwork so much. Sourced from the winery’s own Napa estate grapes, this powerful yet elegant red is a Cab Sauv in ALL CAPS, but it still leaves plenty of room for exquisite balance and complex nuance to thrive.

About the wine

2013 was a ridiculous year for the Carter team. The Cabernets they created from that year’s harvest rocked a 97pt average wine score; a figure that included not one but two Robert Parker 100pt perfectos. This seductive selection certainly shows why wine critics clamor when Carter drops a Cab on the public. Together with longtime winemaking partner and fellow viticultural impresario Nils Venge, Mark turns to Envy’s estate vines in the Napa to source the most succulent Cab Sauv grapes he could find. It appears that not a single piece of excellent fruit was missed, as this brazen, bosomy beauty contains the kind of over-the-top power and graceful balance that backs up Mark’s impressive accolades. Mighty aromatics of ripe blueberries, cassis pie, and toasty praline seduce the nose. The palate showcases a medium-to-full body that elegantly reveals layers of vanilla gelato, dark black cherries, spiced nougat, ripe blackberries, and fine tea spice with a light toast essence. Its cedar-tinged finish is guided by supple, chewy tannins. This is the wine to breakout and share!!

About the winery and vineyard

Envy Wines’ origin story started with a wine list. Co-founder and vintner Mark Carter assembled an award-winning one for his hotel’s dining spot, the acclaimed Restaurant 301. The list led to Mark hosting a slew of winemaker dinners. More importantly, it led to a long-lasting friendship with the legendary Nils Venge, the “King of Cabernets” who hauled in California’s first perfect wine score from Robert Parker. The duo joined forces to launch Carter Cellars’ highly-praised label in 1998, and founded Envy Winery in 2006 to give these selections a permanent home. Today, when they aren’t using their viticultural clout to gain access to some of Napa Valley’s most prized and exclusive vineyards, they’re sourcing succulent Cab Sauv, Petite Sirah, Merlot, and Sauv Blanc grapes from their own estate vineyards planted in the Calistoga AVA. These latter vines are used to forge this stupendous expression of Califonia Cab Sauv. Blessed with Napa’s most dramatic diurnal swings, cool coastal-influenced breezes, and hardy volcanic bedrock, these Cab grapes ripen at a slower, steadier pace compared to other areas. This extended growing season produces brawny, bold fruit that practically knocks down the door and demands 95+pt ratings. In Mark and Nils’ incredibly capable hands, such lofty marks are practically assured with every passing vintage.

About the winemaker

Duos don’t get more dynamic than the one-two punch of Mark Carter and Nils Venge. Mark has basically touched every aspect of winemaking over his storied career, from building award-winning wine lists for his acclaimed hotel/restaurant property to routinely cranking out 95+pt wines as owner of Carter Cellars and Envy Winery. Nils’ reputation as the “King of Cabernets” was etched the moment he hauled in a perfect Robert Parker score while at Groth back in 1985; the first California wine to do so. This combined pedigree grants the two access to an All-Star list of vineyards that the average vintner can only dream about, like To Kalon Vineyard and Las Piedras Vineyard. As the recent slate of high 90pt and perfect 100pt wines prove, Mark and Nils show no signs of squandering this primo access.

94-96 pts - Brian Whitaker, Certified Sommelier

"Mark Carter is a legend in the Napa Valley! One of only a handful of winery owners to be able to source fruit from the most historic and prized vineyards in Napa (To-Kolan, Las Piedras). His 2013 Envy Cabernet shows Matt's love for what he does best - make mind-blowing epic over the top rich, ripe, sexy Napa Valley Cabernet. One sip you'll know exactly what you're dealing with - dark black cherries, ripe blackberries, and blueberry pie. Layered french oak showing fine tea spices, light toast, vanilla, nutmeg, baking spice."

94 pts - Tastings.com

"Dusty violet color. Fruity, toasty aromas and flavors of ripe blueberries, cassis pie, and praline with a satiny, tangy, fruity medium-to-full body and an even, involved, long vanilla gelato, spiced nougat, and cedar finish with well-integrated, chewy, woody tannins and moderate oak. A superbly balanced and flavorful Napa cab that will improve with age."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING
