Rioja was a mere blip on the viticultural map when Palacios Remondo launched some 70 years ago. The winery and region rock a hefty presence in the wine world today, thanks in large part to Palacio Remondo’s winemaker extraordinaire Alvaro Palacios. This mind-bending Grenache finds The Wine Report’s 2008 Winemaker of the Year at the top of his game, as he honors the legacy of the winery his father founded by organically transforming estate-grown berries into a brilliantly refined expression of Rioja’s singular terroir. Marked by a delicate structure and seductive smoothness, this proprietary label strikes a most sublime balance between elegant, high-minded fruit and grounded earthy nuance. This is the Rioja region at its utter apex, so don’t miss out.

About the wine

The drought that defined Rioja’s 2009 and 2010 vintages kept rolling right along in 2011. The lack of rain was also accompanied by the coolest July the region experience in over a decade. These conditions proved to be the bones of viticultural magic for Palacios Remondo’s winemaking wizard Alvaro Palacios. The Wine Report’s 2008 Winemaker of the Year climbed the 2,100 feet required to get to the property’s estate vineyards and painstaking selected the most succulent Grenache grapes its vines had to offer. Under his watchful eye, accomplished hand, and organic-influenced will these berries blossomed into a gorgeous expression of finesse and nuance; a well-balanced label whose lilting structure and fruity complexity are nearly reminiscent of a top-shelf Pinot Noir. Lush notes of ripe berries, Mediterranean forest floor, aromatic herbs, fresh cream, and toasted oak appear on the nose. A silky-smooth palate transition leads to a flourish of fruity and floral essences, buoyed by an elegant mouthfeel. Well-integrated tannins lead to a seemingly endless finish. This is the perfect entry point for wine lovers looking to make the serious jump into the wonderful world of Spanish wines.

About the winery and vineyard

Palacios Remondo is as intertwined with Spain’s Rioja as the area’s vineyards. The region as the wine world now knows it was just taking shape when Jose Palacios Remondo launched his semi-eponymous winery in 1945, and it can be argued that both winery and region mutually assured each other’s success. Today, the growth of both qualifies as a full-fledged explosion, and the man with the TNT is Jose’s son, winemaking impresario Alvaro Palacios. There’s no question he’s got skills; winning awards like The Wine Report’s 2008 Winemaker of the Year provides abundant proof of this. Yet the engine that drives his collection of phenomenal wines here is an unshakable passion for making wine that does right by the land and by his father’s legacy. For this superb red blend, Alvaro pays tribute to both by sourcing prime Grenache grapes from property’s highly elevated estate vines. Perched at around 2,100 feet in Eastern Rioja, these 30- to 90-year-old vines only produce around one kilogram of fruit per year. However, the fruit that does emerge is jam-packed with a complex character that’s greatly influenced by the landscape’s well-draining volcanic-infused soil. Alvaro’s unmatched skill set makes sure every speck of nuance is extracted from these enticing berries, producing a proprietary label that further deepens the relationship between the winery and the region it calls home.

About the winemaker

Alvaro Palacios is one of Spain’s undisputed viticultural kings. The winemaking pioneer earned such coronation by bringing the country’s historic Priorat region back from the dead and transforming Bierzo into a white-hot source for excellent wines. He’s also got the hardware to back up this claim: The Wine Report crowned Alvaro Winemaker of the year in 2008, and he snagged Decanter Magazine’s Man of the Year honors in 2015.  Since taking over the winemaking reins at Palacios Remondo in 2000, he’s augmented his jaw-dropping skills with a deep passion for perpetuating his late father’s legacy, not to mention the legend of his family’s 350-year winemaking history. He honors both by strictly adhering to a traditional-fueled, organic winemaking process; one that naturally deploys a deep respect for Rioja’s magical terroir. It’s a strategy that’s destined to propel his brightly shining star even higher into the wine world’s stratosphere.

96 pts - Decanter

"This 100% Garnacha has aromas of roses and liquorice on the nose then a classic, linear palate whose tannins show steadily increasing grip alongside red currants and pink grapefruit."

95 pts - Alex Casella, WSET Advanced

"Blueish cranberry red color with notes of black plums, black raspberry, fresh pressed cherry juice, dark chocolate and roasted herbs on the nose. This has a sophisticated palate that is showing a bounty of primary and secondary red and black fruits, finishing with spices, fine-grained coffee, and mineral. This has the ability to pair with game, stews, roast pork, roast vegetables, and even blue fish. Enjoy now or over the next 4-6 years in the cellar. Big time value and case purchase from a top notch vintage!"

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
