How do you honor 50 years’ worth of Robert Mondavi’s legacy? If you’re the winery that bears his name, you make a 50th Anniversary wine. You also make a follow-up label once the original selection flies off the shelves as if had wings. This second version of the winery’s limited production Maestro label is every bit as indulgent as the initial celebratory model and they upped the ante by adding To Kalon and Stag's Leap fruit! Winemaker Genevieve Janssens sources fruit from two of Napa’s most prestigious vineyards and produces a stunning Bordeaux-esque beauty; an engaging expression of elegant structure and fruity character that practically drips. Get this now or regret it later.

About the wine

The 50th Anniversary edition of Maestro was so nice, Robert Mondavi decided to make it twice. It was a decision seemingly blessed by Bacchus himself; 2014’s growing season was so exquisite, winemaker Genevieve Janssens and her exceptional team practically had little choice but to craft a follow-up to their limited-release, highly desirable golden anniversary label. Just like its sister selection, Mondavi went all-out to craft a sublime Bordeaux-style blend. Genevieve and company meticulously selected four varietals from two of Napa’s most acclaimed vineyards and meticulously merged their voices into one distinct, harmonious expression of terroir. Their splendid collective craftsmanship yields a vibrant, elegant blend driven by juicy fruit and plush tannins. Deep, dark plum and cassis fruit propel this brilliant blend from the nose to the palate. Gentle nudges of violet and cinnamon emerge amid an exquisite mouthfeel, providing enticingly complex depth to the journey before it ends on a cocoa-accented finish. It’s a label that honors the inimitable vision of one of Napa’s true founding fathers, all while serving as an indulgent reminder that its legacy is as strong as ever.

About the winery and vineyard

In 1966, Robert Mondavi planted the seeds that would flourish into the Napa Valley that we all know and love. Such lofty praise is well-earned: some 50 years later, even the basest of wine-drinking novices have been able to connect Mondavi’s moniker to Napa Valley’s essence. It’s a massive legacy to hold up, yet the talented winemaking team that stands behind Mondavi today not only makes Mondavi legend shine brightly, they make sure the name’s gravitas shines as bright as ever. Led by Director of Winemaking Genevieve Janssens, those that touch the winemaking process adhere to the very viticultural principles that Robert himself set as his winery’s foundation since day one. From sourcing the finest grapes from the best vineyards possible to the pitch-perfect deployment of winemaking traditions mixed with innovative techniques, their vine-to-bottle handiwork leaves very little doubt that Mondavi will remain one of Napa’s immovable pillars for the next half-century. Their adherence to Robert’s vision is extremely evident in this exquisite 50th anniversary blend. Genevieve and her skilled team painstakingly scoured Napa Valley’s most premier vineyards to source the quintet of varietals that combine to give the special selection its voice. Their dogged, wide-reaching pursuit of perfect fruit is perfectly symbolic of the immense, passion-driven effort that Robert gave to his labels at every harvest without exception. The result of their arduous process is a stupendous red blend that would make Robert himself beam with pride.

About the winemaker

There may not be a more appropriate winemaker to bring Robert Mondavi’s groundbreaking vision to the masses than Genevieve Janssens. Her storied career is marked with all kinds of eye-catching stints, from studying under world-class French enologists Jean and Pascal Ribererau-Gayon to gaining acclaim at Opus One Winery. More importantly, she’s been showing off her award-winning skills at Robert Mondavi Winery since 1978. Over the course of nearly four decades, she’s wholly embraced Robert’s own passion for terroir, as well as his boundless appreciation of every single soul involved with the viticultural process from vine to bottle. Today, the pure joy and remarkable wisdom Genevieve possesses for winemaking is lovingly imparted to the next generation of Mondavi vintners, thus assuring that the winery’s next 50 years are every bit as memorable as the first 50 years.

96 pts - Alex Casella, WSET Advanced

"Dusky purple color with big bold fruits on the nose. Blackberry, crème de cassis, cocoa dust, espresso bean, lavender and rosemary fill the senses. A valiant palate with nervy undertones, bountiful tannins that relaxes on the finish providing a classy and fulfilling mouthfeel. This is a stunner that will age gracefully for the next 5-10 years, but in a sweet spot today from a top vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet. Mondavi is a name you can trust for consistency and quality in wine. Pick up a sixer of this gem without question. Enjoy it with a Herb Crusted New York Steak with Rosemary Butter."

97 pts - Wine Review Online (2013 Vintage)

"The Robert Mondavi Winery's 50th anniversary wine is a fitting tribute to the man who did more to establish the Napa Valley's cred than any other. This is an unusual blend for Napa, top-heavy on merlot and cabernet franc in the image of a proper Saint-Emilion from Bordeaux. Showing fresh red and black-fruit aromas and sweet, supple tannins, it has power combined with elegance and the staying power that is so appropriate for a tribute wine."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

KEY ADVANTAGES OF TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
  • This service is provided to you at no additional cost
