Terra Valentine’s unofficial title is the Hidden Gem of Spring Mountain. This bold claim is strongly backed up by this masterful 96 point interpretation of the critically acclaimed Napa Valley AVA. Winemaking impresario Sam Baxter has joined fruit from the property’s dual estate vineyards in a most holy matrimony of terroir expression, forging an indulgent Cab blend! This is one Napa blend that’s not to be missed.

About the wine

Marriage has always been a deeply personal wine for Terra Valentine winemaker Sam Baxter. Its first vintage in 2002 was made to honor his own nuptials to his wife Angela. Yet this high 96 point wine is more than just a symbol of wedded bliss. It also showcases prime Spring Mountain AVA vines in a deeply committed relationship; one that finds Sam providing his usual excellent counsel. Specifically, he’s joined together choice fruits culled from Terra Valentine’s two Spring Mountain estate vineyards - Wurtele and the Yverdon (Yverdon was sold to Jackson Family Wines, Lokoya), passionately coaxing each speck of terroir-driven nuance each grape had to offer. His meticulous handiwork yields a glorious Bordeaux-style blend that’s propelled by bodacious fruit and elegant, firm structure. Pronounced aromatics of ripe black currant and blackberry enthusiastically appear on the nose, leaving just enough space for dusty earth and licorice notes to emerge. A dense, warm transition leads to an opulent, palate-coating expression of bing cherry, soft earth, smoky oak, and spicy bacon. Elegant tannins guide the wine to a lengthy finish. It’s an exquisite red blend that’s perfect for any occasion. Like a wedding anniversary, perhaps.

About the winery and vineyard

Terra Valentine’s underlying mission is to bring the joys of the Spring Mountain AVA to life. Considering its unofficial nickname is the Hidden Jewel of Spring Mountain, it’s safe to say they make this mark with every harvest. The mastermind behind its somewhat humble star power is owner/winemaker Sam Baxter, the second-generation vintner that transformed the winery from a rough-and-tumble property that lacked hot water to a breathtaking venue known for producing 90+wines with metronome-like precision. For this splendid Bordeaux-style blend, Sam continues the winery’s underscoring mission by turning to the winery’s two Spring Mountain-ensconced estate vineyards, Wurtele Vineyard and Yverdon Vineyard. Like any proper marriage, each property brings their own personality into the union; in this case, they deliver differently nuanced interpretations of Spring Mountain’s critically lauded terroir. Sam’s outstanding blend of scientific knowhow, practical acumen, and willingness to listen to his gut guides the grapes sourced from these vines to form a perfect union worthy of immense praise and high 90+ point tallies. Mission accomplished.

About the winemaker

Sam Baxter seemed destined for winemaking career. As a youth, he’d trail his legendary father Phil Baxter into the vineyard, eagerly watching him plant the seeds of Napa’s reputation as a world-class region. All those years of observation triggered a deep passion for viticulture; one that led him to post-UC Davis graduate gigs at Sterling Vineyards and a harvest in Australia. This combination of academic acumen, practical experience, and a touch of “go with the gut” instinct has served him rather well at Terra Valentine since he joined the winery in 1999, and his steady string of 90+ point masterworks over the years has shaped the winery into one of Napa’s most polished gems. When he’s not making wines for Terra Valentine, he can be found making crafting selections for his own limited-production label, Fortell Wines.

96 pts - Wine Enthusiast

"Few wines in the world can boast this concentration of ripe, flashy fruit. It's decadent and enormous in blackberries, cherries, currants, licorice, bacon and spice flavors, which are all melted into the perfect fusion of alcohol and warmth, and elaborated with smoky, toasty oak. With its level of elegance, this is wonderful now, and it should drink well over the next 15 years."

95 pts - Alex Casella, WSET Advanced

"Always have loved Terra Valentine and Spring Mountain AVA and here is precisely why... This wine has a gorgeous ruby purple color with a crimson hue. The bouquet shows its unique terroir and present notes of mountain blackberry, macerated dark fruits, dried rose petal, sage, mint, graphite/slate like nose, refined toasted oak and with a hint of espresso bean.  Boasting loads of black raspberry, dark chocolate, purple sage, lavender, baking spice and minerals on the palate. This is a truly delightful wine that gains weight as it opens up and increasing pleasurable as the bouquet drives the finish. This is a no-brainer wine that has all the bells and whistles now and will only be elevated after 3-5 years in the cellar, plus price under fifty for Napa Valley Sub-AVA juice. Bring on a seared Kobe Beef steak, lamb Osso Bucco, or Beef Stew with this winner that has the right tannins to cut through these hearty dishes. Enjoy now or over the next 5-10 years in the cellar."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
