Growers know their grapevines on a deeper level than any winemaker, making Chaix’s Cabernet Sauvignon a rare treat from a Rutherford vineyard that’s made wines like Phelps’ Insignia a household name. The 2014 combines Rutherford’s signature minerality with ripe cherry, cassis, and plum tones that make having just one sip impossible. The 13th bonded winery in Napa, the Chaix family knows a thing or two about coaxing the best from their Rutherford Bench soil, and the 2014 Cabernet is no exception. Get it while you can!

About the wine

Still farmers at heart, Chaix produces less than 500 cases of their signature Cabernet Sauvignon annually making this a wine to snap up while you still can! Full-bodied, yet smooth and well-rounded, Chaix wines have quickly developed a fantastic reputation among winemakers and collectors alike. Compelling aromas of dark fruit, dry earth, cocoa, leather and herbs lead into a ruby wine that’s overflowing with flavors of ripe plum, cassis, and fresh cherry. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with fine-grained and silky tannins. The Chaix family purchased their 37 acres of vineyard land in the 19th century, seeing promise in Napa far before the Judgement of Paris and the region’s catapult to fame. From soils on the Rutherford bench, which is covered with sedimentary soil from ancient volcanoes perfect for ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, the Chaix wines are incredibly expressive and an asset on any table or in any cellar.

About the winery

In the mid-1800’s, the brothers Chaix came to Napa from France’s Provence region.  They bought vineyards in Napa’s Rutherford, Oakville and Howell Mountain districts and were instrumental in the development of the Napa Valley Wine Co. and Ladera Ranch – both sites are now Napa Heritage Sites.  Their crown jewel in Rutherford has remained family owned since inception, and their reputation is right up there with Inglenook and B.V.  In fact, they’re B.V.’s long-time source for elite Cabernet and at one point, Joseph Phelps made them an offer they couldn’t refuse, buying part of their vineyard.  Guess where those grapes go…  100 years after the vineyard was first planted, the family convened and wondered if it was finally time to make their own wine.  The decision was unanimous – YES! – and they haven’t looked back.   It’s going to be quite the ride as people discover the unbelievable quality that originates at Chaix.

About the vineyard

Chaix (pronounced “shecks”) sits in one of the most enviable spots in all of Napa.  At the southern end of the Rutherford Bench, it abuts the Mayacamas and has some pretty ridiculous neighbors.  Joseph Phelps, Inglenook, Staglin, Heitz’s Bella Oaks, Cakebread, Sequoia Grove – on and on, the diamond-grade soil stretches in every direction, and Chaix sits right in the heart of it all.  Originally planted by A.P. Chaix in 1909, it came from highly-prized cuttings sourced from the heart of Bordeaux’s Medoc region, home to four of the five First Growth estates.

About the winemaker, Sam Baxter

Son of Rutherford Hill winemaker, Phil Baxter, Sam is a third generation winemaker – pretty appropriate for a 100-year old vineyard.  With Napa roots that go just as deep as those of the vines at Chaix, Baxter is a throwback winemaker who is the perfect match for the dark, loamy Rutherford fruit at his disposal.  Heavily influenced by working with his father (he started blending in his teens), Sam’s best known for his robust, long-lived Cabernets made at Terra Valentine.  Classic Cabernet all the way.  The thing that sets Baxter’s wines apart from the pack is their approachability at every stage of development.  Ready to drink from the outset, they uncoil slowly with cellaring, reaching their peak in 5-8 years from vintage date and holding for as long as 20+ years.

"Nearly opaque purple, spicy blackberry, dark chocolate, black cherry, cedar, and rosemary fill the senses. Lots of clove, anise and intense black fruits linger on the finish. Well put together and framed for luxuriousness and longevity. This has a bit more edge and sophistication than many other 2014’s I have tasted and will drink well for the next 5-15 years. Pair with Herb Crusted Filet with pink peppercorn cream sauce, grilled rosemary lamb loin chops, and rich cheddar cheese. Impressive.

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.

  • Your wine can be protected from environmental damage for the entirety of its journey
