About the wine

Great wines stem from great grapes. That’s the mantra of many a winemaker. For genius vintner Aaron Pott, it’s a near-sacred decree, and he’s proven its sacrosanct power one high 95+wine after another.  So when the Dylan’s Ghost co-founder and winemaker turns his attention to a single vineyard, it’s a given that the target of his focus is phenomenal. He may have outdone himself with the selection of Del Barba Vineyards. Indeed, this 67-acre hunk of land is no ordinary vineyard. Its first vines were planted by the Del Barba family in 1910, and several of the land’s ancient gnarled gems are part of the California Historic Vineyard Society today. The family-owned vineyard’s longevity can be traced to the Del Barbas’ unwavering insistence of keeping their traditional, non-intensive winegrowing style in place from one generation to the next. It’s a strategy that’s allowed them to make it through two World Wars and the scourge of Prohibition, and it’s also enabled to provide the backbone for several of Napa’s most exquisite Zinfandels. Aaron has sourced the best Zin grapes he could find from the vineyard’s twisted beauties; he’s also picked up a small stash of Mourvedre and Carignan for good measure. Together, the mélange of fruit Aaron’s secured blossoms into a decadent expression of Napa Valley terroir that’s ready to be enjoyed for years to come.

About the winery and vineyard

It’s fitting that Dylan’s Ghost is named after legendary Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. After all, each wine produced by Joseph Carr and Aaron Part’s critically-acclaimed label captures the spirit of the vineyard with the thoughtfulness and creativity of a well-composed literary work. Aaron’s the author behind the winery’s highly praised labels, and his dual status as co-owner and winemaker grants him the peerless opportunity to write the story of each label on his own terms. For this splendid selection, Aaron’s found a remarkable main character in Del Barba Vineyard. This killer Contra Costa County vineyard has been dispensing terrific tales of terroir since its first vines were planted in 1910. Generation after generation, these low-yielding family-owned vines enjoy Jordan-esque hang time thanks to the Contra Costa AVA’s stirring mix of free-draining sandy soil and substantial diurnal temperatures. This results in decadent grapes that develop rich, complex flavors that leave enough room for acidity to shine through. Aaron’s inimitable mix science-driven acumen and sterling ability to deploy just the right amount of innovation results in a fantastic red blend that demonstrates why wine has long been referred to as bottled poetry.

About the winemaker

As a winemaker, Aaron Pott merges the land and the lab better than just about anyone in Napa. Armed with a Master’s degree in Viticulture from the prestigious University de Borgogne, Aaron’s scientific-driven knowledge base enables him to scrutinize each harvest with a razor-sharp technical precision and a virtually intuitive knack for deploying the right technique at the right time. At the same time, the terrific hands-on experience he received by studying under the legendary Michel Rolland and by serving as winemaker for Chateau Saint Emilion’s Troplong-Mondot honed invaluable viticultural instincts that can’t be picked up from reading a book. Aaron didn’t waste time using this broad acumen to nab Napa rock star status, as the very first vintage he made at St. Helena’s Seven Stones snagged a 99+point rating. Aaron’s wines have been routinely landed around the 97+ point range ever since, thus granting him the ability to capture the wine world’s complete attention whenever he announces the release of a thrilling new label.

"When gifted winemaker Aaron Pott and vintner Joseph Carr launched the Dylan’s Ghost project in 2010, the focus of the brand was to craft terroir-driven wines with grapes from iconic vineyards in Napa Valley. But as adventurers, they were also open to thinking outside the box. Eventually, this journey led them to the historic Del Barba Vineyard at the base of Mount Diablo in Contra Coast County.

Farmed by the Del Barba family since the early 1900s, this unique vineyard offers a treasure trove of classic old vine California selections of Zinfandel, Carignane and Mourvedre (Mataro), all of which are planted on the special white sandy Dehli soils that are the signature of the Contra Costa region.

From the 2015 vintage, this heritage field blend is filled to the brim with complex flavors and a true sense of place. Once poured, the aromas of dense black fruit, licorice, wild herbs and smoky cedar give way to concentrated flavors of dark cherry, briary blackberry, ripe raspberry, wild sage, mint, cocoa, vanilla, mineral, and layers of spices. With time in the glass, these deep, rich flavors and polished structure begin to meld together as the firm tannins start to soften and create a magnificent full-bodied wine with true old vine character. For food pairings, try this rich and powerful wine with blue cheese, pasta with hearty red sauce, grilled meats, venison stew, lamb shank, and dark chocolate."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:


  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.


SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.


Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.


If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.


TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.


You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.


Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
