Star Washington winemaker Chris Peterson’s latest blend puts Columbia Valley’s magic front and center. Chris sources seven varietals from five different vineyards to create an exquisite Bordeaux-style blend that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Col Solare and Corvus.  Big fruity aromatics of black cherries and black currants are tempered with thrilling notes of leather, mocha and thyme. This balancing act continues on the palate, as black fruits are joined by graphite and cigar box amidst a bright acidity.   

About the wine

The name of this excellent red blend is a nod to Bordeaux’s Graves region. Once the bottle is opened, it’s easy to see how the homage to the Old Country continues. Chris Peterson’s skilful blend harmoniously produces a full-bodied expression of generous fruit whose audacity is kept in check by terrific complexity and balance. An enchanting swirl of black currants, black cherries, mocha, and leather is joined on the nose by a subtle caress of thyme. The aromatics seamlessly transition to balanced notes of black fruits, cigar box, and graphite on the palate, perked up by a bright acidity that carries to a satisfying finish. It’s a full expression of the Columbia Valley that serves as a reminder that Washington State blends should never be overlooked.

About the winery

Avennia’s Pacific Northwestern roots aren’t just planted in Columbia Valley’s fertile soil. Managing Partner Marty Taucher is a native Oregonian and Oregon State grad who worked at Microsoft before jumping into the viticultural biz. The winery’s Winemaker/Partner Chris Peterson also hails from this corner of the country and earned a degree from the University of Washington. Their mutual love of wine is planted in different origins; Marty’s has collected wines for a quarter-century, and Chris has spanned the globe to become immersed in classic Old World techniques. These different passionate pathways intersect at the same goal: to create and curate a winery that realizes the full potential of Washington State wines. Considering their uncanny knack for racking up glowing reviews for their bevy of single varietal wines and blends, it’s safe to say they’ve succeeded in this pursuit.

About the vineyards

An All-Star lineup of five vineyards contributed grapes to this fab blend, including Bacchus Vineyard and Dionysus Vineyard’s highly desirable vines. Each vineyard brings an enticingly different interpretation of the southern Columbia Valley’s expansive terroir; sometimes, this diversity is self-contained, as witnessed by the quartet of different soil types blanketing Bacchus’ and Dionysius’ gently rolling hills. The vineyards’ differences in soil and elevation gracefully spin off a connective climate through-line drawn by warm days, cool nights, and low humidity. This common bond allows each vineyard and varietal to play nice together, leading to a red blend that proudly carries the characteristics of a Washington State wine.

About the winemaker

The past holds a wealth of information about wine’s future for Chris Peterson. The Pacific Northwest native and University of Washington graduate has spent oodles of time amongst some of France and Italy’s most celebrated winegrowing regions, passionately immersing himself into the meticulous process of Old World winemaking techniques with each adventure. This well-honed acumen enabled Chris to build his star at DeLille Cellars, where he spent seven years producing a bevy of showstopping, region-defining wines. Today at Avennia, he expertly applies the time-tested throwback methods he’s mastered to produce thoroughly modern wines filled with rich expression and near-bottomless character.

"Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot make up nearly equal parts of this blend, with the balance Cabernet Franc (9%). Coming from a who's who of vineyards that includes Bacchus, Red Willow, Klipsun and Boushey, it offers nuanced, supremely well balanced aromas of spice, dried herb, raspberry and blackberry. The palate delivers on all of this promise with succulent yet still reserved red and black fruit flavors that show purity, focus and impeccable balance that kicks it up a notch."

"The estate's entry-level Bordeaux blend is the 2013 Gravura, which is 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc that spent 20 months in equal parts new and used French oak barrels. It’s deep ruby/purple color is followed by a classic notes of leafy herbs, chocolate, tobacco leaf, black currants and earth. This medium to full-bodied, rounded and downright sexy 2013 has terrific mid-palate depth, supple tannin and an already hard to resist style. Nevertheless, it should still keep for 7-8 years."

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPPING OVERVIEW

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:


  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.


SHIPPING SCHEDULES FOR TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED SHIPMENTS

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.


Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.


If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.


TRACKING INFORMATION

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.


You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.


Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
