The legend of Caymus Special Selection is passed down from one generation of wine lover to the next – Year after year, it scores so high it’s almost a joke! 97-99pts is not only in play each year, it’s happened nine times already!! Tasters expect 2014 to stand as the best Special Selection ever, when all is said and done.
About the wine
Caymus Special Selection is the culmination of the Wagner family’s Herculean efforts in pursuit of the most sensual, fulfilling and delicious Cabernet on Earth. Back in the early days, Randy Dunn helped the Wagners make the most of their excellent Cabernet, planted to clones brought from the Fay Vineyard (made famous by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars). Dunn, who later went on to become a legend in his own right, correctly recognized that there were certain plots under Caymus control that were so good, they deserved to be a wine all on their own. Thus was Special Selection born and the Wagner family’s eight-generation march towards perfection may have reached its destination. Tasting the resplendent fruit, creamy vanilla oak and utterly silky texture of the 2014 is an experience that Cab lovers won’t soon forget. It’s borderline tragic that a wine of this superior quality from a vintage of such generous concentration should be so hard to come by.

About the winery
“Not many wineries, anywhere in the world, can match the Wagner family's consistent record of success” – Robert Parker
The Wagner family is up there with the Mondavis for the title of America’s winemaking dynasty. Each family member makes stellar wines from a variety of Californian appellations and patriarch Chuck Wagner steers the august Caymus Vineyard with an unapologetically Californian verve. Chuck could rest on his laurels with the reputation of Caymus Special Selection Cabernet, but if you ask him, there’s so much more to do. That’s why each year, they prospect for newer and better sources to augment the rock-solid core of elite fruit that has made them synonymous with excellence.
About the vineyard
Special Selection is the result of perhaps the most demanding selection process for any reserve wine in Napa. Lots from only the finest vineyards in Napa are evaluated for their concentration, complexity, length and compatibility. Barrels that would be another winery’s flagship bottling are cast aside in pursuit of even finer flavors. Caymus is obsessive about two things: keeping the quality of their wines stratospherically high and keeping their fruit sources and techniques a secret. That said, it’s known that the family prefers gravelly loam soils and may include as many as 8 different sub-appellations in the final blend as they craft a seamless wine.
About the winemaker, Chuck Wagner
Winemaker Chuck Wagner received the Wine Spectator award for Distinguished Service, reserved only for those individuals who make a significant and long-lasting impact on wine. It’s a fitting honor for this living legend who not only created two Wine of the Year award winners, but has also produced offspring with the same potential to create legendary wine. His children captain the ship at such California luminaries as Mer Soleil, Belle Glos, Emmolo and Conundrum. Lovers of Wagner’s style come back over and over for the signature Caymus taste: ripe, soft fruit, sweetly spiced oak and a texture that flows across the palate like heavy cream.

"Beyond fabulous! This is how a Cabernet should taste."
"Never disappoints! Simply delicious!"
"Incredible Cab. Sting fruit character followed by intensifying tannins ending in a long, lingering finish"
95 pts, Wine Spectator #44 Top 100 2016
"This zeroes in on a rich, hedonistic core of wild berry, blackberry, plum and currant flavors, with a graceful, elegant mouthfeel and supple, caressing tannins. The long and powerful yet refined aftertaste keeps reverberating fruit generosity while maintaining Cabernet's strength of personality. Drink now through 2030."
