25 years ago, the Wagner Family added to their Caymus prestige by creating Conundrum as the ultimate CA white blend. But the phenomenal success of Conundrum isn’t attributed to the mere attraction of Caymus. In Conundrum, Chuck Wagner proved that by breaking the rules of what grapes can be blended together, a skilled winemaker can unlock a window into a whole new universe of possibility. He turned an unlikely combo of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat into America’s favorite premium white wine. Just released by the winery, the 2014 Conundrum White is better than ever.

About the wine

The not-so-secret sauce of Conundrum, is the un-traditional blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Muscat Canelli, and Viognier. It’s a combination that features richness, acidity, and a luscious exotic quality vividly expressed from start to finish. Other grapes are used (something the Wagner’s like to keep proprietary,) but the above grapes always anchor the blend. Full of peach, citrus, a creamy richness, snappy acidity, and honeysuckle fragrance. 2014 was an excellent vintage that follows two equally excellent vintages. One of the many reasons why Conundrum continues to grow in popularity is that it’s made for the table. It pairs swimmingly well with salmon, roasted chicken, Thai take-out, and just about any plated date.

About the winery

Conundrum launched 25 years ago as a daring, non-traditional concept by Caymus proprietor Chuck Wagner. He blended together Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscat (and perhaps a few other grapes) into an exotic white wine so instantly popular that it soon became the most sought after premium white wine made in America - now for over two decades! Conundrum is not Caymus, but it’s a wine that gives the Wagner’s a winemaking canvas to explore and experiment beyond the Napa Valley and showcase what they do best - making great California wine. The wines reflect a playful and serious profile.

About the vineyards

The exact vineyard sources having always been kept under wraps by Conundrum. Mostly because of the ongoing, ever-changing nature of pursuing the best grapes in each vintage. What’s abundantly clear from a quality perspective, is that the Wagner’s not surprisingly  are able to access very high quality fruit for Conundrum from California’s top growing re. Conundrum White includes Napa Valley, Santa Barbara, Monterey Counties, and beyond.

About the winemaker

Winemaker Charlie Wagner II grew up watching his father and grandfather create unique blends for dinner. The eldest of Chuck’s (Caymus co-founder) children, is owner and winemaker for Mer Soleil winery in the Santa Lucia Highlands, in addition to overseeing winemaking at Conundrum. His path to becoming a winemaker was clear from a young age. Charlie grew up in Rutherford, though much of his time is now spent on the central coast of California at Mer Soleil. During his primary and secondary school years, Charlie spent most of his spring and summer breaks working in the vineyards or the cellar at Caymus. His career in winemaking began in earnest at 16 years old, when his high school counselor granted him permission to spend two days out of every three weeks working in the family’s Mer Soleil vineyard.  Upon graduating from high school, he worked alongside Jon Bolta, the winemaker of Conundrum and director of operations for the Monterey County winery, apprenticing in every step of the vineyard and production process for the family’s white wines.  With the 2003 vintage, Charlie took over full production responsibilities for Mer Soleil Chardonnay.

In 2005, Charlie created a new wine inspired by the French Chablis-style through the process of fermenting and aging a portion of his Chardonnay in concrete tanks. SILVER, Mer Soleil’s popular brand of unoaked Chardonnay—packaged in a ceramic bottle to reflect the concrete vessels used in its creation —was born.  Charlie has also recently released Conundrum Red, a proprietary red wine blend and partner to the popular Conundrum White.

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
