Sometimes a secret is too good to share. This Chard from Domaine Christian Bellang’s historic property is one of those secrets. Its label reads Bourgogne Blanc because of a vineyard quirk, but make no mistake: What winemaker Christophe Bellang has created is a purely vibrant Meursault Chardonnay buoyed by vivacious fruit, subtle earthiness, and pinpoint balance. Thanks to the efforts of former French Laundry somm and wine adventurer Ruben Moreno, this clandestine expression of Meursault terroir is no longer hidden from view. Chard lovers would be wise to take advantage of this sumptuous revelation.

About the wine

Part of what makes wine fun is exploring a label’s origins, and the genesis of this exquisite Chardonnay is one of the best around. Technically, the Chard fruit sourced by Domaine Christian Bellang’s expert winemaker Christophe Bellang are only partially planted in Burgundy’s Meursault region. This causes the wine to be classified under Bourgogne Blanc; an intriguing wrinkle helps prevent its global price tag from skyrocketing like other Meursault wines. This is great news for wine lovers of all stripes, because this astounding selection is a sensually pure expression of the lieu-dit’s signature terroir; a vibrant vixen whose bright, ripe fruit is gracefully tamed by subtle minerality.  All the earmarks of a classic Chardonnay experience are present and heightened, from heavenly pops of ripe citrus fruit and Meyer lemon to a nuanced undercurrent of butter, earth, and spice. These exceptionally balanced notes form a Chard experience enraptured the taste buds of former French Laundry Sommelier and viticultural explorer Ruben Moreno, to the point where he feels compelled to import the label for the masses to enjoy. One sip is all that’s needed to know his reaction is completely warranted.

About the winery & vineyards

The winemaking history of the Meursault estate that Domaine Christian Bellang calls home dates back to 1789. Yet the timeline wine aficionados tend to observe traces back to 1974. That’s when fifth-generation vigneron Christian Bellang took over the family business from his parents and infused it with a remarkable sense of ambition. Christening a new collection of wines bearing his name merely scratches the surface of his vision. Together with his winemaking son Christophe, Christian has grown the estate exponentially, adding plots in Meursault, Beaune, Chorey les Beaune, and Savigny les Beaune. He’s also pushed the estate’s reputation to unprecedented heights along the way, and it’s a given that any wine bearing his moniker is representative of the truest voice the encompassing Burgundy region has to offer. For the creation of this stupendous label, Christophe sources Chardonnay fruit from Sous la Velle, a single vineyard ensconced in the gravelly clay soils adjacent to the gently elevated town of Meursault. It’s arguably the region’s most unique vineyard; only half of its vines are located in the Meursault AOP. As such, this label simply rocks the Bourgogne Blanc designation. Yet there’s no mistaking that the Chard grapes sourced here are lush Meursault fruit, as they’re jam-packed with ripe fruity essence and nuanced minerality. Christophe extracts every square millimeter of this singular complexity from the fruit, resulting in a classic expression of Meursault that carries the esteemed legend of his father and his family forward.

About the winemaker

Christophe Bellang has done more than follow in his father’s viticultural footsteps. He represents the sixth generation of winemakers in his family, so he’s charged with basically upholding a massive, impressive legacy. Yet since he joined Christian Bellang at his father’s eponymous winery in 1995, Christophe has proven himself most worthy of carrying such a weighty mantle. He does so by fiercely adhering to his pop’s philosophy of wholly respecting the terroir and its surrounding environments, meticulously working with whatever secrets the estate-owned vineyards wish to spill within a given vintage. Considering the deep reverence wine lovers profess for his labels, it’s safe to say Christophe doesn’t need to change a thing about family-inspired process.

97pts Christopher Sawyer, “Somm to the Stars”

"It happens everyday around the globe.  It’s that moment when consumers have an epiphany when they taste a delicious wine made with Chardonnay grapes grown in Burgundy. It’s something different—a true wine sensation loaded with a plethora of aromas and flavors that really express why a classy Bourgogne Blanc is so different from all the rest. A magnificent example is the 2014 Sous la Valle Chardonnay. Made by the revered Meursault-based  producer Christian Bellang & Fils, this sophisticated wine immediately draws you into the glass with fragrant aromas of ripe stone fruits, citrus, fresh pineapple, magnolia blossom and signature flinty-mineral notes that showcase the unique soils where the grapes are grown in Meursault and other nearby villages. On the palate, the rewards keep coming with lively flavors of green apple, peach, pear, pineapple upside-down cake, lemon zest and toasted almonds; a burst of vibrant acidity; and a long elegant finish. At only 12.5% alcohol, it’s also a very graceful wine without being heavy or cloying. For pairings, serve this lovely Burgundy gem with smooth cheeses like Brie or Toma, fresh crab cakes, Asian pear salad, pasta with creamy white sauce, grilled chicken breast, or roasted pork tenderloin served with a tangy fruit salsa. Also, don’t forget spring right around the corner, it’s a great time to load up on this stunning 2014 vintage offering from the famed Cote d’Or region before its gone!"

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
