Groth Vineyards & Winery has been stunning the wine world since their Reserve Cab hauled in Napa’s first-ever perfect Parker score.  This fantastic label continues its annual habit for blowing minds and dropping jaws. Rich, brazen, and relentlessly layered with mighty fruit and nuanced earth, this Cab Sauv proves this is one winery not content with pushing forward on past glories. Those that dare fancy themselves as hardcore Cab lovers shouldn’t let this label slip past.

About the wine

Oakville’s killer terroir causes a feeding frenzy amongst skilled vintners every year. This is especially the case in years like 2013, which proved to be a worthy successor to 2012’s generational harvest. Fortunately for Groth Vineyards & Winery’s Winemaking Emeritus Michael Weis, he doesn’t have to deal with the maddening crowd to get spectacular fruit. He merely has to turn to Groth’s remarkable Oakville estate vineyard, whose vines produced a Reserve Cab that nabbed California’s first ever Parker perfect tally back in the day. Michael nabs top-notch Cab grapes from the estate’s 28-acre reserve block, and in typical Michael fashion, allows them to find their voice on their own terms. They clearly have a lot to say. Decadent and burly yet underscored with a refined sense of nuance, this Cab expresses terroir in a manner that shows why Napa big boys like Opus One and Screaming Eagle knock on Oakville’s door every year.  Pronounced aromatics of blackberry preserves, dark chocolate, espresso bean, and pencil shavings kick off the journey in a massive way. These notes transition to a dense expression of wild cherry, black licorice, anise, smoke, tobacco, cedar, and herbs that aggressively expand on the palate. Firm yet finessed tannins lead to a powerful finish. This is an “all-caps” Cab that is destined to delight even the most discerning California Cab snob.

About the winery and vineyard

It’s not hyperbole to refer to Groth Vineyards & Winery as a Napa game-changer. They were the first California winery to be awarded a perfect 100 score from Robert Parker, a plaudit that the family-owned vineyard could coast on if they so desired. Yet that’s not the way owner Dennis Groth and Director of Winemaking Michael Weis operate. In fact, the look of the operation hasn’t changed a whole lot. The winery still sources their fruit from Oakcross Vineyard, the 121 acre Oakville plot the Groth’s purchased way back in 1981. There’s no real reason to change things up; the vineyard’s classic Oakville combo of fog-caressed climate and gravelly, alluvial soils produce perfectly succulent Cab Sauv grapes; ones that demonstrate why esteemed wineries like Opus One and Screaming Eagle flock to the appellation.  Under Weis’ skillful hand, the vineyard’s grapes transform into critical darlings that renew Groth’s legacy whenever they’re released.

About the winemaker

Michael Weis has a Master’s degree from winemaker factory UC Davis. His resume includes stints as winemaker for Vichon and as an experimental enologist for Robert Mondavi. Yet perhaps what’s most impressive about Groth’s Director of Winemaking is that he knows enough to step aside and let the grapes speak for themselves. There’s nothing fancy about his winemaking philosophy; to him, it’s simply a matter of sourcing the best grapes possible, deploying techniques that protect their integrity, and not rest on the laurels that inherently come with Groth’s region-defining name. Considering the scores of 90+point wines he’s created throughout his 20+year tenure at Groth, it’s safe to say his approach to making exemplary wine is fundamentally sound.

94+ pts - Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

"The personality of this great Napa Valley vintage comes through loud and clear in the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. Dark, imposing and tannic, the 2013 is also going to need quite a bit of time to come around. The inclusion of 24% Merlot has softened some of the contours, but the 2013 is a decidedly big wine. Lavender, violet, mint and black cherry add the nuance."

95 pts - James Suckling (2012 Vintage)

"This is very classy with mineral, black currant and spice character. Shows chili and Thai basil too. Full body, firm tannins and a bright and persistent finish. Extremely long and elegant. Best ever from here in years?"

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
