Some Napa debuts raise eyebrows, but the 2014 LAZ Cab’s launch has craned necks at whiplash-inducing speed. At the center of such rampant attention is the one-two punch of cult wine specialist Kerrin Laz and winemaking legend Celia Welch of Scarecrow Fame. The formidable twosome has teamed up to produce a hyper-limited Cabernet Sauvignon whose deservedly high reputation has already caused it to nearly vanish. Sourced from some of Napa’s most prized vineyards, this smooth and sensual Cab shows some dark fruit and an ever-evolving complexity at every turn. We were lucky enough to secure the last remaining cases available and this new comer in the world of Napa Cult Cabs simply can’t be found anywhere else, so act accordingly.

About the wine

A lot of Napa eyeballs were eagerly focused on the production of Laz’s debut Cabernet, and with good reason. Firstly, this inaugural limited production label is backed by former Dean & Deluca Wine Director Kerrin Laz, a person whose knowledge of cult Napa wines is unrivaled. Secondly, it’s made by wine consulting impresario and Scarecrow Winemaker Celia Welch. This remarkable red is indeed Celia’s follow-up project from the highly lauded Scarecrow. She’s picked up right where she left off. This is a devilishly layered diva whose silky refinement is driven by near-ceaseless complexity. Sumptuous aromas of purple fruit and cocoa dust lead off the experience. The notes seamlessly segue to a silky, expansive palate expression of violets, mocha, cassis, and nuanced graphite. Seamless tannins guide to a long, sensual finish. This hyper-limited beauty will make a perfect companion piece to Laz’s 2015 vintage, which is currently being bottled and will be released in the fall to a lucky few collectors on the mailing list.

About the winery & vineyards

This exquisite label marks the first new consulting project for Celia Welch since her renowned Scarecrow collaboration, and she wastes no time proving her skill for sourcing prime fruit is at a top level. For the creation of this phenomenal red blend, Celia tracks down sumptuous grapes from some of Napa’s All-Star appellations, including St. Helena, Rutherford, and Oakville. Each of these stupendous AVAs bring their own interpretation of Napa’s world-class terroir to the table. Under Celia’s splendid guidance, each segment of land gets the opportunity to have their unique voice shine through. The result of her touch results in a hyper-cult masterwork that’s worthy of the clamor typically reserved for the hardest-to-find Napa labels.

About the winemaker

Celia Welch has spent over 30 years in constant pursuit of viticultural perfection. She’s traveled the world to satisfy this passion, from burgeoning global forces like New Zealand to obscure players like the East Coast. The remarkable acumen she’s honed from such globetrotting has transformed her into one of Napa’s bona fide wine consulting superstars. Over the years, her impeccable skills have been tapped to produce labels for Barbour Vineyards, and Scarecrow Wines.  She has the awards to back up her illustrious status, too: named her one of their Top Ten Tastemakers in 2006, and Food & Wine Magazine crowned her Winemaker of the Year in 2008. When she’s not deploying her expertise and near-intuitive knowledge of Napa terroir for other wineries, she’s making magic through her own label, Corra Wines.

95 pts - Alex Casella, WSET advanced

"Stunning Beet Purple color greets an intoxicating nose and palate of brambleberry, white chocolate, iron, spice, crushed sage, mint and generous, but gracious oak. Lots being delivered here in the mouthfeel and the foundation will expand and grow more complexity in the near term, but this wine is also built for the ages. Vast versatility in this wine and is certain to please an adventurous dinner crowd and thoroughly enjoyed alone at home over a three-day span or after hyper-decanting. The elegance here will impress and reward many in years to come and can pair with everything from roasted pork, duck, filet tenderloin."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
