In 1999, Provenance boldly splashed onto the Napa viticultural scene with its initial Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon. Nearly twenty years later, this exquisite label continues to make ripples. Expert winemaker and Napa legend Tom Rinaldi’s final full take on this label leaves yet another indelible mark on the wine world, as he transforms the very best grapes he could from Rutherford’s epic landscape into a decadent beast jam-packed with rich texture, vibrant acidity, and scintillating earth-driven nuance. This is not just a wine. It’s a symbol of an esteemed legacy.

About the wine

2014’s vintage proved to be a more than worthy follow-up to 2012’s epicness and 2013’s excellence. The conditions provided a gold mine of succulent Cab Sauv fruit in the virtual California Cab cradle that is the Rutherford AVA. This was not lost on Provenance winemaker and Napa legend Tom Rinaldi, who seized the opportunity to make a Rutherford Cab that could stand shoulder to shoulder with his winery-defining 1999 Provenance debut. He didn’t disappoint. This luscious label is a richly dense, ruby-hued starlet that’s driven by opulent texture, bright acidity, and velvety smoothness. An aromatic melange of black licorice, creme de cassis, and anise swirl around the nose. These lush notes transition to a dense expression of trademark Rutherford earthiness, which are subtly rounded by essences of brown spice, ripe dark fruits, and cigar box. These nuances guide the journey to a supple, full finish. This was one of the last Provenance selections Tom worked on from start to finish, instantly making it a strong legacy label for any self-respecting wine aficionado’s collection.

About the winery & vineyards

Loosely translated, Provenance is French for ownership of a piece of art. It can also be a geological term for an area’s sedimentary composition. Regardless of interpretation, it’s been the perfect moniker for this remarkable Napa Valley winery from the moment their inaugural 1999 vintage hit the shelves. Their initial Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon transformed the voice of Napa’s prized appellation into a venerable work of art; an intensely bold yet graceful seductress that instantly left an indelible mark on the California Wine Country map. And while the winery has grown by leaps and bounds in the last decade and a half, the viticultural approach first instilled by legendary vintner Tom Rinaldi still provides its heartbeat. That philosophy certainly governs the creation of this outstanding label, as Tom returns to the very Rutherford AVA that propelled Provenance onto the tips of oenophiles’ tongues. His skilled hand has coaxed prime examples of why this appellation is considered sacred ground by so many vintners, from the opulent fruitiness brought forth by warm summer days to the earthen notes kicked up from its famous “Rutherford Dust.” His masterful guidance results in a bountiful beauty that lives up to Provenance’s esteemed name, with or without the translation.

About the winemaker

The spirit of Tom Rinaldi is present in every wine that dare rock the Provenance label. It’s felt because each sumptuous selection crafted follows his passionate viticultural approach; a simple yet elegant philosophy steered by gentle grape guidance and deep respect for whichever terroir the fruit is sourced. It’s a philosophy that helped Tom create a Cab Sauv that Wine Spectator crowned the top California wine in 2013. Today, the mindset propels Provenance’s bevy of excellent wines; complex, nuanced gems that are perfect conduits for engaging conversation. Tom would be proud.

"Stunning boysenberry ruby color leading to a nose of wild blackberry, fresh picked cherries, violet, white chocolate and espresso coffee. A bounty of black cherry and briar fruit all intermingle on the palate concluding with a fleshy mouthfeel that will produce weight in years to come. The medium tannins glide across the mouth producing a silky fresh finish that tempts for another sip. The oak treatment is harmonious, the wine is well balanced and will age well for the next 5-10 years. Case purchase from a Napa Valley dream vintage and AVA Designate."

94 pts, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (2013 vintage)

"As for the red wines, the 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon (14,460 cases) from Rutherford is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It was aged 22 months in mostly French oak, although some American and Hungarian casks were utilized. Most of the fruit comes from the Beckstoffer George III vineyard as well as Hewitt’s own estate vineyard. This beauty may be the best Cabernet Sauvignon from Provenance that I have tasted to date. Loads of crème de cassis, creosote and smoky barbecue notes are followed by a wine with deep blackcurrant fruit, some black cherries, a hint of loamy soil, nice spice, and a layered, full-throttle mouthfeel. The acids are present, giving the wine energy, yet there’s a long finish and impressive purity. This is no wimpish wine either at 15.2% natural alcohol. Drink it over the next 20+ years."

Other Offers

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

* Note that ice packs (if ordered) will be added to your package at this time.

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.

Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
