It’s fitting that Rombauer was founded by the great nephew of the woman who wrote the seminal book “The Joy of Cooking.” Ever since their first Cab Sauv dropped in 1980, the family-owned winery has been delivering happiness by the bottle. This movement of merriness carries forth through this terrific label, as skilled winemaker Richie Allen sources grapes from six of Napa’s most prestigious AVAs to create an exquisite expression of concentrated, full-bodied elegance. Vivacious aromas of blackberries, plums, and sweet tobacco segue to pops of blueberry, violets, and vanilla on the palate before ending on a long, lingering note.

About the wine

The warm, dry conditions that marked the 2014 vintage was the kind of stuff serious practitioners of sustainable viticulture dream about. Indeed, it was an environment practically custom-made for Rombauer’s talented vintner Richie Allen, whose viticultural practices are rooted in the winery’s long-standing belief in honoring the land at every step of the winemaking process. He deployed plenty of sustainable love to create this outstanding Cab Sauv, sourcing grapes from a wide host of Napa Valley’s most celebrated AVAs such as Stags Leap and Rutherford. He carefully guides the melange of plucked fruit into a harmonious, full-bodied expression of elegance and intense concentration that sublimely showcases the thrilling diversity of Napa terroir. Expressive aromas of blackberries, cherries, plums, rosemary and sweet tobacco dramatically ascend from the wine’s dark purple hue. Overflowing notes of blueberry and black cherry join the fun on the palate, whose curvy essence allows for hints of violets, bramble, and vanilla to make themselves known. Supple tannins guide the journey to a long, lingering finish. It’s a graceful Cab Sauv whose presence can transform even the dourest of situations into a happy occasion.

About the winery and vineyard

It’s not surprising that a bottle of Rombauer equates to terrific happiness. After all, it is a family tradition. Winery co-founder Koerner Rombauer’s great aunt, Irma Rombauer, wrote “The Joy of Cooking,” the book that singlehandedly turned home cooking from a necessity into something cool. Koerner did his own wine-centric riff on this paradigm shifting event when he and his wife Joan launched Rombauer in 1980. His version of unfettered glee was brought about by an undercurrent of seriousness, as carefully cultivated partnerships with Napa heavyweights like Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Conn Creek grew the winery’s reputation from underling to icon, to the point where their name is practically an adjective for describing California Chardonnay. Today, acclaimed winemaker Richie Allen continues to write the winery’s compelling story by upholding the honorable, sustainably-charged winemaking principles that Koerner himself set in motion two generations ago. His commitment to doing things the right way is clearly evident through the creation of this Cab Sauv. He calls upon a venerable who’s who of Napa Valley appellations to gather his exquisite fruit, such as the Rutherford AVA and its iconic “dust” and the San Pablo Bay-influenced vines of the Stags Leap district. Grapes from the Atlas Peak, Mount Veeder, St. Helena, and Calistoga AVAs are also plucked for good measure, and Richie’s skillful hand ensures that each area’s distinct, iconic voice can emerge cleanly. This carefully cajoled harmony produces a brilliant red that effortlessly brings about joy the moment it’s shared. Irma would be proud.

About the winemaker

The call of wine country was too strong for Richie Allen to ignore. He just needed one afternoon of California wine tasting to spark an interest in winemaking, leading to a globetrotting odyssey that saw him hone his craft in New Zealand and his native Australia. His ever-growing passion for viticulture led him back to California in 2004, where he became just the third winemaker in Rombauer’s acclaimed 37-year history. Today, his deep respect for traditional techniques and his forward-thinking zeal for modern innovation are the hallmarks of his unwavering quest to build epic, terroir-honoring wines that push each grape he carefully selects to its absolute limits. It’s a pursuit that’s underscored by a passionate sense of joy, making him the ideal steward of Rombauer’s ongoing legend.

"The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon, which is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Merlot, has an inky purple color and a relatively good-sized framework, with plenty of blackcurrant fruit, toasty oak, underbrush and earth. It is medium to full-bodied, not terribly complex, but again, mouth-filling and chunky. Drink it over the next decade." (RP) (12/2016)

Thank you for trusting Vivino for your wine orders! In order to ensure that your wine is protected from the elements during transport, Vivino has developed a comprehensive program for temperature controlled shipping:

  • All shipments to Non-West Coast states (CA, OR, WA, ID, MT, WY, NV, AZ, CO, NM) will be sent via temperature controlled truck to the closest regional hub. These facilities, referred to as "gateways", are temperature controlled and located strategically throughout the country.
  • Once a shipment arrives at the gateway*, it will be transferred to UPS or Fedex for the final part of its journey

All orders placed before 1pm EST on Wednesday will be shipped out on Friday of the same week. All orders placed after this time will be stored in a temperature controlled warehouse and shipped out the following Friday.

Delivery times, therefore, may take 8-14 days from order date, accounting for fulfillment, 4-5 days shipment to the regional hub, and 1-2 days for local delivery.

If you would like a more expeditious delivery option, please select 2-Day or Overnight Shipping.


Tracking information will not be available for your shipment until it reaches the regional hub, due to the fact that the shipment is sent via common (temperature controlled) carrier and there is no individual tracking number for the package.

You will however receive a confirmation email indicating that your shipment has left the West Coast warehouse and is en route to your closest regional hub. Your order will say "UPS Label Created", but this label will not be scanned until it reaches the regional hub.

Once the shipment reaches the regional hub, you will be able to track your package (likely 4-5 days after shipping date). At this point, the package is en route to your home/office.
